    Kelly Mattarocci (00:03.254):
Hi, welcome to the System of Money. I'm your host, Kelly Mattarocci. I'm a certified public accountant with more than 35 years of experience helping business owners like yourself navigate growth, profitability, cash flow, risk, decision making, among many other things. Throughout those years, I've worked with startups, family-owned businesses, high net worth individuals, high growth organizations, and publicly traded companies.

Over the decades, I've sat across from hundreds of business owners, leadership teams, and executives. Some were struggling. Others were generating millions in revenue. Something that has always surprised me is the businesses making the most money weren't always the ones that felt the most confident. And the businesses that felt the most confident weren't always making the most money.

Does that seem right? Is your business growing? Revenue is increasing, and you're making more money than ever, but you still hesitate before major decisions because you're not completely sure what the numbers are telling you? Then this podcast, it's for you.

Do any of these questions sound familiar? Can I afford to hire another person? Why is cash tighter than I expect? Are we growing too fast?

    Kelly Mattarocci (02:04.51):
Is profit actually turning into cash? Why am I working harder than ever yet feel less certain about what's happening? If these questions sound familiar, you're exactly who this podcast is created for. Because this podcast, it isn't about helping struggling businesses survive, it's about helping successful business owners gain control. It's about transforming money from a source of stress into a system of clarity, confidence, and better decisions.

Now let's talk about the hidden tension behind success. Over the years, one statement has appeared time and again. "Kelly, we're making money, but I still don't feel like I know what's happening."

I remember working with a CEO whose company had just finished its best revenue year ever. On paper, everything looked successful. Revenue was growing, customers were buying, the future looked bright. Yet the CEO said to me, "I just don't understand. We're making more money than ever, but I feel more worried today than I did when we were a fraction of this size."

That statement, it stuck with me. Why? Because he wasn't failing. He was succeeding. Yet confidence, it wasn't growing alongside revenue. And that's more common than most people realize. Many business owners assume that more revenue automatically creates more control. But often the opposite happens. As a business grows, complexity grows. You see it in areas such as more customers, which you want, more employees, again, a good sign, more software, more obligations, more decisions, and more risk.

Suddenly, the business looks successful from the outside, but it feels harder to manage from the inside.

    Kelly Mattarocci (04:22.86):
The issue usually isn't that something is broken. The issue is that the system underneath the money has become harder to see. Now, let's talk about the real problem. And that isn't money. One of the biggest myths in business is the belief that financial stress is caused by a lack of money. In my experience, financial stress is more often caused by a lack of visibility.

Most owners focus on outcomes such as revenue, profit, cash in the bank. These numbers, they're important. They matter a lot, but they're not the whole picture. They're only part of the story. They're actually the result of something much deeper, a system, a system of decisions, a system of information. A system of money, your system of money.

Think about it like this. You're watching a scoreboard without ever actually seeing the game. You know the score, but you don't know what happened in the game to create it. That's how many business owners run their businesses. They know the numbers, but they don't always understand the forces driving those numbers.

And when you can't see the system, everything feels reactive. Cash surprises you, growth feels expensive, important decisions feel uncertain, and stress becomes normal. But stress it isn't supposed to be normal. The business that operates with confidence, it isn't necessarily looking at more reports. They're seeing the system behind those reports.

And that's what eventually led me to create the framework you're going to hear throughout this podcast. That framework, it's the System of Money. After decades of working with business owners, I realized something very important. This really wasn't an accounting problem. We were counting. It was an understanding problem.

    Kelly Mattarocci (06:43.938):
Business owners don't necessarily need more reports. They need a better way to understand what money's trying to tell them. That realization became what I now call the System of Money. Every business already has a system of money. The question isn't whether you have one. The question is whether you can see it. Because money, it touches everything.

Every hiring decision, every pricing decision, every investment, every expansion plan, every operational change. Eventually, every decision shows up in your financial numbers. Which makes money one of the most powerful forms of leadership feedback available. Let's talk about the System of Money. It consists of five elements:

One, Flow. Two, Visibility. Three, Control. Four, Alignment, and Five, Stewardship. Today, I'm going to introduce the definition and brief examples of the first three: flow, visibility, and control. I'm starting with those three because this is where many business owners begin to move from stress towards control.

    Kelly Mattarocci (08:16.6):
Flow. Flow answers a simple question. Where does money come from? And where does it go? Most owners know their revenue number. But revenue alone doesn't explain how money moves through a business. How quickly are customers paying? What commitments already exist? What is consuming your cash? What's generating cash?

Flow helps us understand this movement. And until you understand this movement, it's difficult to feel in control.

Two, Visibility. Visibility answers another important question. What are the numbers actually telling me? Not just what are the numbers, what do they actually mean? What is improving? What is declining? What is changing beneath the surface? Visibility transforms data into understanding. And understanding creates confidence.

Three, Control. The third of the five elements that I'm going to discuss today is control. Control answers the question: how do we use that understanding to make better decisions? Should we hire? Expand? Invest? Is it time to raise prices? Do we wait to launch the product? Should we forecast differently?

Control is where information becomes action. It's where a business owner moves from reacting to anticipating. It's where decisions become intentional rather than emotional. And ultimately it's where confidence comes from. Because confidence isn't created by money alone. It's created by understanding the system behind the money. Your system of money.

    Kelly Mattarocci (10:21.578):
It's the leadership shift. One of the most important lessons I've learned is this. Numbers, they do not create control. Understanding creates control.

Most business owners, they review their numbers. Strong leaders, they interpret them. They ask, what changed? Why did it change? What is this telling me? What decision should I make because of it? Every number is a signal. Cash, it is a signal. Profit, it's a signal. Margins, they are a signal. Your forecasting, it's a signal.

The goal, it is not more reports. The goal is reaching a point where you can confidently make decisions about hiring, growth, pricing, investments, and strategy because you understand what your business is telling you. That's the transformation we're pursuing through this podcast. It's not more information, it's more clarity, it's not more stress, it's more control.

The good news is that you don't need a new accounting system, a new dashboard, or a finance degree to begin building control. You simply need to start seeing your business differently because every business already has a system of money. You already have a system of money. The question isn't whether it exists. The question is whether you can see it. And the fastest way to see it is to start asking better questions.

Over the coming episodes, we'll use the five elements to examine the challenges, decisions, and opportunities that shape every growing business. I don't want this to remain a theory. I want to start by applying it immediately. So before we finish today, make the commitment, take the first step toward greater visibility, better decisions...

    Kelly Mattarocci (12:47.87):
And more control. Your one simple action step. Take five minutes and answer three questions. Number one, where did your cash actually enter your business last month? Not revenue, cash. Which dollars actually arrived in your bank account and where did they come from? Were they customer payments, retainer deposits, financing, or something else?

Number two, where did the cash leave my business? What obligations, commitments, or decisions consumed it?

Number three, what decisions am I currently making without enough visibility? Are you making hiring decisions, pricing decisions, expansion decisions, or investment decisions without enough visibility?

You may be thinking, why go through this exercise? I will tell you why. Because better questions lead to better businesses.

    Kelly Mattarocci (14:20.138):
And better decisions create better businesses.

    Kelly Mattarocci (14:27.22):
Here's what I want you to remember. If you're making money, but you still don't feel completely in control, the solution may not be more revenue. The solution may be a greater understanding. Because money, it isn't just a number. Money, it is feedback. It's showing you how your business is operating. It's revealing patterns, highlighting risk, exposing opportunities.

And when you learn how to read that feedback, you begin making better decisions. And remember, better decisions lead to better businesses. The goal isn't simply better financial results. The goal is becoming a more confident leader because successful businesses are not built by revenue alone. They're built by consistently making better decisions. And better decisions begin with understanding your system of money.

In our next episode, we'll start with the first element of the five-element framework, flow. We'll explore why profitable businesses still experience cash stress and how understanding the movement of money can give you greater clarity and control before problems appear.

    Kelly Mattarocci (16:41.494):
Money, it is feedback. And when you learn how to read that feedback, you stop reacting, you start leading, and you begin transforming money from a source of stress into a system of control, into your system of money. See ya next time.
